Ischemic Stroke

• The most promising treatment for ischemic stroke is to administer an injection of a blood clot dissolving agent, such as rtPA, to disband the unwanted clot involved in a stroke. The clot dissolving drug is an effective emergency treatment to unclog a blocked blood vessel or artery. Unfortunately, this drug is not suitable for every patient and it must be administered within a three-hour window from the onset of stroke symptoms for maximal effect.

• The use of Mannitol and Glycerol is based solely on the severity of the swelling effects in the brain caused by the stroke. These drugs are administered to reduce the intracranial pressure in the patient.
• Surgical treatments will be determined based on the size and location of the bleeding and the possibility of the stroke complications. It is usually contemplated for life-threatening complications and it is not effective in reducing disabilities.
